Oakland Zoo's Celebrating Elephants[Edited from Oakland Zoo's original press release.] Oakland, California - The Oakland Zoo (http://www.oaklandzoo.org) hosted Celebrating Elephants on Sunday, May 19th, 2001. The event is a culmination of festivities planned to raise the awareness of the challenges facing elephants in the wild and in captivity. This unique event recognizes the conservation work of Cynthia Moss and offers information on the future role of elephants in the wild and in captivity. The Oakland Zoo presented "Elephants of Samburu", a lecture by elephant researcher George Wittemyer in the Marian Zimmer Auditorium on Thursday, May 17, 2001, at 7:00 p.m. The lecture was preceded by a Silent Auction and reception at 6:00 p.m. featuring over 100 animal related items, including artwork by Oakland Zoo's very own elephants. All proceeds benefit the Amboseli Trust for Elephants's Amboseli Elephant Research Project. The following are the photos from the 2001 events. The photos from the 2000 events are posted at http://elephanttrust.org/oakland_zoo.htm.
