While ordinary Spaniards cope with harsh austerity, recession and soaring unemployment, the country's royal family has been enjoying expensive hunting trips, one of which resulted in King Juan Carlos ending up in hospital.

Been to botswana 4 times on photosafari. In June 2009 the safariguide pointed to an aeroplane in the sky and said: that is the privateplane of the king of spain. He comes here 3 times a year to kill an elephant , it costs 30000dollar a time. All the pilots, guides, safaricompanies knew this, so since the WWF has lots of staff in southern and east africa they must have known it too, so why act as if they are flabbergasted and furious now?

The Media

Perhaps because the media reported it widely this time?

He was injured, and his 13-year-old son shot himself in the foot with a shotgun. Perhaps that was needed to get some media attention.

As Spanish, I feel shamed.

I swear you that I did not have knowledge of the cruel practices of hunt of the king of my country, so I have to say to all that, as Spanish, I feel really frustrated and ashamed, though he is Juan Carlos, which should not have the calm conscience. In these days, there have been issued in my country images of the king of Spain and other hunters murdering elephants, buffaloes, leopards ..., which it had never seen, for what, the only thing that I can wish this type of persons, is that the life returns to them the evil that they are doing.

Once again and with very much pain, I express to you my more sincere excuses as Spanish.

The Spanish are really fed up

The Spanish are really fed up with the royal family, every day a new scandal, but this last one is too much.
Last year was broadcast on public television documentary "Echo and Amboseli elephants". Then, we could know and love these wonderful friends. I think our anger is not only because of the excessive spending in times of crisis but also because it was spent in such a cruel and criminal activity. I think this scandal can raise the sensitive people consciousness about the need of protect wildlife in general and elephants in particular.

I agree with Nigel

In my opinion, the most important of this news it is not the money that the king of Spain wastes in economic so critical situation, but he has murdered to an animal seriously danger of extinction, which for me is more valuable than any person in the world. But the saddest thing is that this one is not an isolated fact, since during all his life he is been fond of the hunt and has travelled to African countries to murder constant elephants, leopards, buffaloes...
Pardon the expression, but right now makes me sick to be Spanish, and by the news that I have read and seen in the media in my country these days, many people feel just as outraged as I, but unfortunately, for most people, this will remain a mere anecdote.

Spanish BS

The comment seems to focus on the cost, not the waste of wildlife, again using the bullshit name of conservation to defend it. They have to be dead to be conserved. At least the WWF has to get off its fat ass and do something with this problem.
