The EB Calves Know How to have Fun
Echo's family, the EBs, have had seven new calves since November. Ebony, Eliot, Enid, Ella, Elettra, Echeri and Eleanor have given birth to six males and one female. Eliot has the female, but this calf more than holds her own with her male cousins.
All the new EB calves are very active, very playful and amazingly self-assured. They have no fear of leaving their mothers and going off to have fun. They seek out the other calves and have great games together. They mostly run around in little gangs. Their favorite game is climbing on a calf who is lying down. The others all pile on top and then they wiggle and kick.
Once in a while one of them gets hurt and lets out a cry. Then the allomothers come running and break up the scrum. Not for long though. Soon they are back chasing one another, butting heads and pulling on tails.
Life is good for these calves. They don't have a worry in the world, but for those of us watching them there is such a feeling of dread about their future. How can we keep them safe? Sometimes it seems like an insurmountable task but these calves make us want to fight even harder.
