New IFAW blog: Rain and Elephants

muddy boys greeting each other Car or boat? This was the road leading to Ol Tukai after the first real rain. ...and this is what happens when you off-road in the wet season. Norah's smile is so wide because it wasn't her that had to clean the car afterwards! Flossy relaxing Body-painting, modelled by Leila, matriarch of the LAs. Elephants appear this colour when they have been out to the East side of the Park. Ebony from the EBs decides to come up and say hello to Norah. She then decided to go to sleep, which was lovely, except when she decided to dustbathe as she woke up and covered both of us and the car in fine dust! Arlus Mabale, who came up to the car to investigate since he heard my voice and decided it was someone new he had to check out. I think I passed whatever test he had though as he soon ambled off back to the family he was spending the day with. Mud-wallowing is definitely a communal activity Monday morning traffic in Amboseli - the BBs and BB2s head into the swamp.

Just to let you know my latest blog is live on the IFAW site - click here to read it. And here are some more photos to accompany the story - many are mud-themed!

We are hoping for yet more rain and although much of it is falling outside the Park at the moment, Amboseli looks beautiful and green. It's great news for people and animals in the ecosystem - the Maasai don't have to bring their livestock all the way into the Park for water now. And our camp water source has reappeared after a short absence - much to my delight as it means slightly longer showers again!

Hello Vicki, my name is Meagan and I don't really know a lot about Amboseli's research and elephants! But these are really beautiful pictures especially the ones of Leila! Is she the daughter of Lillian?
