Little Male with pals Little Male carrying the spear The spear in his trunk

Cynthia Moss, the founder of the Amboseli Elephant Research project, first met the EBs in August 1973. Little male, born in 1968, was son to Emily, a female of the EB family group. By 1983 Little Male was spending less than 20% of his time with the family and thus by our definition he was considered independent. He first came in musth on the 6th June 1999 and has been active since then.

Little male spends most of his time in the Eastern side outside the Amboseli National Park, where conflict is very high due to farming. This year he has been recorded in musth from June to August.

On the 6th of September 2008, as Norah and I were driving towards Emali Bridge, we saw three Elephant males walking in the consimilus grass. We drove up close to them and noticed that one of them [Little Male] was carrying a spear in his trunk. We could tell from a close range that the spear was one of those small-sized spears always carried around by young boys. The other two males [Plato and another young male] were taking care of him. They were getting very close to him and rubbing against him trying to get hold of the spear. There were signs that they had tried to pull it out because the spear had already bent. We have observed such behaviour where elephants try to help each other in such cases.

I telephoned the Senior Warden, Mr. George Osuri, to arrange for a vet to come. We searched for Little Male for two days on the ground. Richard Bonham of Oldonyo Wuas was also kind enough to assist us by flying around searching for him but Little Male was nowhere to be seen. The idea that he is somewhere with the spear still lodged in his trunk and the fact that he can’t drink or feed, is scaring us that we might lose him. The vet gave up after the two days but informed us to keep him up-to-date just in case we found him. We have been searching for Little Male up to date and he is nowhere to be seen. I hate to imagine that he might be dead. I am certain that if we had found him while the vet was around he could have recovered by now.

Any news on Little Male?

Any news on Little Male please?
It was very touching to learn that elephant males take care of an injured friend.
I wish him a full recovery.

Still no news

Dear Hge,

Still no news of Little male and no carcass of dead elephant reported. It is hard to tell what happened but it was kind of hard for his friends to pull out the spear because of the way it positioned. I just hope a miracle happened and the spear fell off and one day I will get to see little male again. Fingers crossed.

Let's hope a miracle

Thank you very much for your reply Solia. Let's hope a miracle. Maybe he would bend down to drink like those little calves. And then his friends could manage to get the spear out.
He is probably the oldest male from the EB family right now. I hate to see such a beautiful bull die in his prime.

Thank you for your time and all the best
Helen

So unnecessary !

So unnecessary !

Even if we can understand to a degree the "old" way of life in these parts of the world one can't but think how tragic this is, we all love and know the EB's and we will be hoping he has not suffered the same tragic fate as his mother almost 20 years ago, once again ultimately at the hands of us humans…

If he has not managed to get it un-hocked from his trunk, how does he drink and eat ! Of all places this spear could have found itself surely the trunk must be the place with the most disadvantages.

Once again humbling to see the companionship of the younger bulls that are following him and surly would have tried to remove the spear,

If you do to see Little Male again let us know, there will always be hope,
Anna M

Some Questions

Mon, 2008-10-13 01:55 by Ellie

Is carrying a spear in his trunk possibly life threatening? Or is it something that he has a high chance of recovering from, going on to lead a healthy life?
And if there is a spear in his trunk, how will he feed etc?
Please update me if/when you find Little Male.

Spear and feeding

Most of the times elephants pull out spears or others help to remove. The Little Male case was a very hard one because he could'nt feed since the spear was in his trunk, which made it very impossible to feed or drink. When I showed the vet the photo of Little Male, he doubted if he could make it because of dehydration. Elephants drink about 160 litres of water every day. But Ellie, lets cross fingers that Little Male will appear one day.

I'll be praying that he's safe and will be able to recover. He's a beautiful bull and it's good to have a big male with the EB genes out there.
