The Situation in Kenya

It’s December 31 and a few hours until the New Year. It’s also four days since the Kenya elections and I know that many of you watching the news must be worried about Kenya and those of us at the Amboseli Trust for Elephants.
The turmoil and violence surrounding the Kenya elections is a tragedy for this wonderful country. Kenya has come such a long way since Independence in 1963 and has remained a peaceful country until now. The transition from one president to another has gone remarkably well in the past, setting a shining example of democracy for the rest of Africa, but this time the system has faltered and chaos has ensued.
We want you to know that we are all safe, although some of us would rather be in Amboseli than Nairobi. Amboseli is peaceful and the elephants are going about their lives happily oblivious to the mayhem in many parts of the country.
Kenyans are reasonable, peaceful people and I believe that good sense will prevail and that a solution will be found that will uphold all the strides Kenyans have made in creating a democratic and free country. This is my wish for the New Year.
