Distressed elephants in Beijing Zoo![]() The movie shows pathological stereotypical behaviour of Asian elephants in the Beijing zoo. September 2003. The trunk-tossing, foot-waving and body-swaying movements are typical of the near-psychotic state of intelligent animals confined, deprived, probably chained and possibly abused. I have posted the still versions on a Picasa Web Album. Most of the images are of two young African eles, who were in fact having great time cavorting in the water, unlike their obviously miserable Asian cousins. Keywords: elephant abuse zoo welfare video

Captive elephants of India
Tue, 2009-11-03 13:20 by suji
The plight of the captive elephants in India, especially in Kerala is awful. Those elephants that are used for moving timber are abused, often worked hard and hit and poked with a metal prong. The temple elephants fare no better. These are beaten so badly during training that when a stick is placed against them, this huge animal would not move even without being chained. When taken for temple festivals they are often made to walk in the hot sun on metal roads which injures their foot. In spite of regulations, many elephants do not get water to drink for 3 or more days while waiting for the festival to start. Once the festival starts, all the noise with drums beating must be so horrible for them to bear that some of them run amok. Here are some videos of elephants killing people http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrFJcAl-9Uo This is the result of years of abuse. Often the hind legs of elephants (the leg that is chained) has huge wounds. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RpgfwQzuzk One moment the elephants are worshipped, next they are treated horribly. They are often fed some huge balls of rice, ghee, sugar etc. made for temple festivals which results in some of them constipating themselves to death.
Often, in Kerala, elephant handlers use elephants as their ash tray and you can see the burn marks.

Torture of elephants in India continues....
From today's newspaper Indian Express Page 4
1) KALPATHY KESAVAN who succumbed to injuries in Palakkad on November 17 is the fourth captive elephant to die of human torture in the last one and a half months
2) SOORYAN, a 48 year old tusker was found dead in a private plot at Mulankunnathukavu in Thrissur on October 3,. Boths its hind and forelegs had 3-year old wounds that were never tended to, its underbelly had puss filled welts, a clear sign of sever torture. Its toe nails had fallen of.
3) MANIKANTAN, a 43 year old tusker was found in the house of an elephant contractor at Pattambi, Palakkad on October 10. It was transported from Alappuzha a month ago reportedly without permission.
The beast had deep torture marks on its body. Its toe nails had come off, proof that the infection on the legs were never cared for
4) PULLUKULANGARA GANESHAN, another 42 year old tusker was found dead on the premises of the Pullukulangara temple, Alappuzha on October 14. The beast died as a result of an internal shock suffered during the familiarisation beating unleashed on it by the new mahout using a "valiyakol" (big stick) a long controlling stick.
5) Tusker KALLEKULANGARA RAJASHEKHARAN and MANGALAMKUNNU RAMACHANDRAN perform the tugging of chariots through the street. Ramachandran now has deep cut on his trunk which is not cared for.
Notes: Captive elephants are usually given names and the above are the names by which these elephants are identified. The family name of the families(elephant is big business, *huge* fees are charged when rented to temples or for timber hauling) that own them are the first part of the name.
