"Revenge of the Elephants" - National Geographic Society
Sun, 2007-08-12 01:57 — Herman
This evening the National Geographic Society cable channel broadcast a report on the above. Amboseli was especially highlighted, as well as Uganda. Joyce Poole was interviewed, as well as others.
Can anyone authoritatively comment on this program?
Thanks.

National Geographic program

I guess my main question is was the program a solid one? At the end, the narrator stated mature male bulls were brought into the area/family groups (South Africa for sure, and also, if I remember correctly, Uganda and Kenya) and the incidents of violence dropped to nil. The physiological changes in the young male bulls (testosterone levels), both before and after the introduction of the older bulls, were very surprising to me; at least (but then I am in political science, not ethology).

Revenge of the elephants
Hi Herman - Soila Sayialel and I can comment on the program - though I am not often on this forum.

Trouble with access to Nat. Geo. video
Betsy Swart sent us the url of of the Nat. Geo. piece, but even with a VSAT connection, I don't have the bandwidth to play it. So, sorry, cannot comment. Perhaps Joyce Poole will.

Low bandwidth - wait for buffering
The method is to start the video, then immediately pause it and wait a little while.
Most players show in the progress bar how much of the video is already buffered. You could wait until it is completely buffered, then continue to watch.
Does this work for you?

Been there...
Yes, know about the buffering business: have seen (and used) it on other sites. But the Nat. Geo. site (url in my previous Reply) first informs me rather distainfully that "This player requires a faster connection to enable smooth connection of video", and when I click to acknowledge my imperfection, it just sits, whether I Start, Pause or whatever. Actually, I sometimes get a scratchy half-start, then nothing. Believe I really am not worth of the NG site.

Turning it into a file
I just made an attempt to record the video through the Firefox VideoDownloader add-on, but it can't handle that web site either.
