elephant bracelets

Would someone let me know if elephant bracelets are "safe" to purchase under any circumstances and, if so, what should the person buying be especially alert for in terms of not supporting unsound and unsustainable practices. For instance, is it better to purchase imitation bracelets. Finally, can anyone recommend reputable sources (for single purchases).
Thanks.
Herman
Elephant bracelets? No.
A bracelet made from elephant tail hairs has to have been taken from a recently dead elephant, either one poached or the victim of a culling scheme. Either way, the marketing of the product is illegal or immoral. Take your choice. If you subscribe to the notion that culling is a solution to a perceived problem, then there is still a downside to putting the products of the operation on the market. At one and the same time you feed a demand for more products (a demand that should be discouraged by education) and you create a smoke screen for illegal products that come onto the market by other route. As with ivory, only elephants should wear elephant tail hairs.
