DB Family under Kilimanjaro

The Amboseli Elephant Research Project is the longest study of wild elephants in the world. AERP works to understand the lives and ensure the future of nearly 1,500 elephants in the Amboseli ecosystem fed by the waters of Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain.

AERP is the field operation of the Amboseli Trust for Elephants. ATE aims to ensure the long-term conservation and welfare of Africa’s elephants in the context of human needs and pressures through scientific research, training, community outreach and public awareness.

AERP is world-renowned as the longest and most detailed study of free-living African savannah elephants. It is also one of the longest uninterrupted studies of individually known mammals in the world — AERP researchers can identify virtually each one of the 1,500 living elephants in the population.

Now in its 35th year, AERP's work is vital to the understanding of elephants in the Amboseli ecosystem and across Africa. Each year, the research discoveries become more important for the understanding of elephant population dynamics and social behaviour. AERP lends a strong and authorative voice to campaigns for managing and conserving elephants worldwide.
